Winter Lights: Kurt Shaffert

It sure is dark out there. And during this season of long nights and short, short days, VFC staff have connected with Vermonters from a variety of backgrounds to explore how people share light—both literally and metaphorically—during the darkest time of the year.

Well I think, ‘I got to just let her rip and lead this - whatever happens.’ And so I think that’s, that’s a way of letting my light shine.
— Kurt Shaffert

Back in the spring before the pandemic began to unfold, United Church of Christ pastor and cartoonist Kurt Shaffert and others started a bible study group. As the public health situation worsened, they quickly shifted online, continued meeting, and became a source of support for each other during this extended period of uncertainty. Last month they decided to keep the group going at least through advent--the period on the Christian calendar that runs from November 29 through December 24. The darkest time of the year.
