Trad Camp 2023 - Day 2
Three guests and so much fun!
Trad Camp Day 2 is complete!
We were lucky to have three guest artists at camp today. We kicked off the morning gathering with a dance led by Rachel Bell (Brattleboro) and her accordion. Later in the morning Aline Mukiza (Colchester) arrived to teach us two dances from Burundi, East Africa. Then at lunchtime we were joined by Migmar Tsering (South Burlington) who performed some Tibetan songs and music and then stayed around to teach one of the songs to a smaller group. Migmar will return to camp each day for the rest of the week and will teach a dance to accompany the song.
At Trad Camp we both try to offer chances for kids to deepen their relationship with instruments, music styles, or art forms they’re already familiar with, and also hope to offer opportunities for discovery and inspiration. Two “one-time” classes today introduced the penny whistle and the mountain dulcimer. Rachel also taught a tune in the style of an “avant-deux,” from Brittany, France to some of the more advanced players in camp.
Our word of the day today was Place.
We talked about how traditions can be connected to a place, community, or culture and we made a list of some of the different places from which we’re learning tunes, songs, and dances this week.
The crankie artwork is getting more and more beautiful and campers are excited to present it at the end of the week. We will sing the song (without the crankie art) tomorrow at the Fletcher Free Library showcase.
