Trad Camp 2023 - Day 1
First day of camp!
Hello Trad Camp families -
We are feeling full and grateful after our first day of camp! It was an action packed day full of merriment thanks to your delightful young musicians, singers, and dancers.
In the morning we were joined by special guest and veteran Trad Camper Oliver Scanlon who shared some fiddle tunes and stayed around for our first lunchtime concert where he was joined by one of his fiddle students and fellow musician Fiona Stowell. A reminder that you can still join us for any of the lunchtime concerts from 12:15-12:45. They are all open to the public! Here’s the line-up.
Dancers today got to try some contra and square dances with Mary as well as some morris dancing. We learned that the morris dance tradition originates from England, just like Laurel, who taught the dance “Shepherd’s Hey” today. Singers also got to learn an English folk song with Laurel and some harmony singing from Maeve. Brian led us in two sing-alongs to get us in the mood for creating our very own “crankie” show (a moving picture created on a scroll of paper that accompanies a song) this week, which will be unveiled at the final showcase on Friday.
Our word of the day today was Listen.
We closed our eyes to listen to Rob play a fiddle tune about a lonesome lighthouse. We talked about what we heard, how it made us feel, and we asked Rob to tell us about the tune and where he learned it. You’re invited to try a similar listening activity at home with your kids!
We’re looking ahead to tomorrow, Tuesday, when we’ll get to try Burundian dance, the mountain dulcimer, listen to a concert of Tibetan music, and so much more!
