Winter Lights: Anak Tseten

It sure is dark out there. And during this season of long nights and short, short days, VFC staff have connected with Vermonters from a variety of backgrounds to explore how people share light—both literally and metaphorically—during the darkest time of the year.

We need all kinds of lights. Material lights, lamps, and also most important: the inner lamp.
— Anak Tseten

Anak Tseten is leader in Vermont’s Tibetan Refugee committee, having served roles such as Vice President and Secretary of the Tibetan Association of Vermont. He is currently the secretary for the Tibetan Community Center project, and coordinates the Tibet Weekend School for youth in Vermont. We spoke with Anak over Zoom about how his family and community think about light.

During our conversation with Anak he also shared his perspective on light in the Buddhist philosophy. We share a bonus clip with you here:

This seasonal segment is part of the Vermont Folklife Center’s Listening in Place project, a program that fosters connections between Vermonters throughout the pandemic and beyond. Click below to learn more about Listening in Place and tell us how you are sharing light this season:
